Group Work 'My Menu'

The new year, with the new batch of form four students. Hope they are ready with what is coming for them.

All the best to them & keeping my fingers crossed.

Starting off with group assignments. Design, create & make their own restaurant menu. Seeing them have so much fun and discussing in their group can make a teacher happy. Its okay for them to be a little noisy, a bit chatty, have some grammar errors but at least they are communicating their ideas and coveying their opinions. Encouraging them to discuss in English is a starting point of many students who are weak. Plus having colourful papers and enhanced with a box full of coloured markers would make any student excited to complete the work. Many hands makes light work.

Here are some pictures of these chatty kids at work, all excited with various materials to use. Not forgetting, they are given little stars to reward stars to groups who did a good presentation. The most number of stars wins the 'presentation-of-the-day'. Next post would be on their scrapbook assignments. Good luck in that kids!

Starting a draft for a Descriptive Essay

The topic of today is "Describe a place you have visited".

You do not know how to start an essay?

Try to picture of a place that you have visited before. Use your imagination. :D

Here are a few pictures to help you along the way.

List out the 5Ws and 1H when drafting an essay. It helps you to focus on what you what to write.

     a) Where did you go to?

     b) When did you visit?

     c) What activities did you do there?

     d) Who did you go with?

     e) Why did you visit that place?

     f) How did you go there?

     * You can change your WH-questions to suit your writing.

Then remember what did you see, hear, touch, feel, smell, taste and do at that place. (Use the 5 senses to help you out)

  a) see

  b) hear (example: sound of birds after the         rain. http://soundbible.com/1827-Birds-After-Rain.html)

  c) touch (soft, hard, rough, smooth, wet , etc)

  d) feel (feelings)

  e) smell ( example: smell of wet grass in the rain)

  f) taste (example: sweet caramel chocolate)

  g) activities (example: backpacking, jungle trekking)

Post your draft at the comments below.

Have fun trying! :D
